Must-walk rating

There have been no changes to this discussion for at least 14 days. If it is concluded, you may want to write a summary.

As I was going through doing some ratings this morning, I found that it would be nice to have a way to indicate that a particular block is viable by dismounting. Not entirely impassable -- it's OK if I am routed for a short distance over it -- but much to be avoided. I've been using Poor for this, and rating anything I'd actually ride on as Fair, but I don't know if that is adequately expressing my potential use of the block.

I think we do need something like this.

Depending on what I am riding, I may not mind walking over a few stairs, but if I'm on the tandem or pulling a trailer stairs are impassible.

Last week I marked some stairs on the U West Bank as "unpaved" on the theory that they don't really have smooth, level pavement. No one's said anything so far.

It would be better if we had a broader list of attributes to assign to blocks and to be able to select/deselect route options that contain selected attributes. For example, most bike trails are not signed and the rideability and safety of trails varies greatly. If I am routed on an unsigned bike trail that I have not been on before I may get lost. I want to be able to tell the routing system not to route me over bicycle trails that I have not rated.
